100 Years...and waiting...
It is the eve of the Great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. It is quite a great achievement for a city to be ruined 100 years ago and to be rebuilt, better than ever. I am glad to say that I live in this great city and can be part of the Centennial.
I have read a lot about the Quake of '06. There has also been a lot of stuff going on in the City over the past month. I guess the Quake back then, especially the aftermath, was just too much for some folks to handle. Subsequently, there was a lot of horrible treatment of many citizens and many were left homeless for quite some time. I can't help but think what we would do today if the same type of disaster happened now?
We are much better equipped and prepared for a big quake these days. But there's not much anybody can do when the ground beneath you starts moving. I have my earthquake kit and know mentally what I will do when it happens.
I have heard that if we have a really big one, 7.5 or more, there will be a lot of death and destruction and things won't be the same for a long time afterwards. It will be a hard time, but I hope that people band together and help each other out. Folks aren't too nice to each other right now. I remember when the '89 quake hit. People were so nice and helpful to each other after that. I guess we all forget what it's like to be in the same boat.
What do you think? Do you take time to reflect and honor the Great Quake? Do you even care? Please post your thoughts and feelings here as we'd love to hear from you. Mike.
